Paralympics Australia congratulates the Australian Olympic Committee on the establishment of an Olympian Futures Fund.
Paralympics Australia President Grant Mizens OAM PLY said the initiative recognises the real-world challenges faced by elite athletes and represents an important investment in their future.
“This announcement shows the power of long-term legacy investment. As we work towards a home Paralympic Games in 2032, we are aspiring to secure a similar opportunity for Paralympians to benefit from a lasting legacy of a home Games that supports their wellbeing long after their sporting careers. Our athletes deserve nothing less.”
The AOC’s new fund has been made possible by legacy reserves originating from Sydney 2000. Those reserves have helped underpin decades of financial security for the Australian Olympic Movement. Paralympians and the Paralympic Movement did not receive the same level of legacy investment and Paralympics Australia continues to rely on strong support from government, corporate partners, philanthropic donors and the wider community to deliver its work to advance the Australian Paralympic Movement.
“The resources available to Paralympic sport continue to grow but we recognise there is much more work to be done. We remain grateful for the support we currently do receive from the Government, our partners and our incredible donors in our ongoing pursuit to ensure more Para-athletes than ever are supported to reach their full potential, in competition and then long after their sporting career concludes.”
