Dubbed ‘Wonder Woman’ by the late coaching great, Jan Cameron, Taylor Corry is one of the Australian Para-swimming team’s most exciting prospects.
Taylor made her Paralympic debut eight years ago at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, where she exceeded her own expectations – but not those of the people closest to her – with silver medals in the women’s 200m freestyle S14 and women’s 100m backstroke S14.
However, at just 17, Taylor did not fully appreciate at the time what it meant to compete and achieve success at the pinnacle event for her sport, and will relish the opportunity should she return to the Australian Paralympic Team for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Post London came another silver medal in the women’s 200m freestyle S14 at the 2013 International Paralympic Committee Swimming World Championships, and a standout World Championships campaign in 2015 saw Taylor win bronze in the women’s 100m backstroke S14, and finish just off the podium in fourth place in the women’s 200m freestyle S14 and women’s 200m individual medley SM14.
As impressive as these results were, they did not earn Taylor a place on the 2016 Australian Paralympic Team, and after also missing selection to the Australian team for the 2017 World Para-swimming Championships – which were later cancelled due to an earthquake in Mexico – it was a long four years before Taylor had her chance to compete internationally once again.
But with a bronze medal in the mixed 4x100m freestyle S14 alongside her teammates Liam Schluter, Ricky Betar and Ruby Storm at the 2019 World Championships, it was well worth the wait.
