Winning gold with 5 lap solo attack in WC5 Scratch race at Glasgow Track World Championships in 2023
Alana Forster was driving to a cycling event when she was hit by another car. The Victorian was airlifted to The Alfred where she spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit, her injuries included a broken pelvis, femur, patella, ulna bones and several ribs.
Before her crash, Alana had been a keen domestic and continental rider, juggling her cycling with a career as a medical doctor. She had done a stint in Europe, raced the Dubai Women’s Tour, and earned top-10 results in Oceania and national time trial championships.
Alana, motivated by the goal of getting back on the bike, endured several surgeries and months in rehabilitation.
The incident left Alana with nerve damage and a loss of sensation. She has since been classified in the C4 para cycling category for riders with lower limb impairments.
The Ballarat local has since won the gold medal in the Women’s Road Race WC4 and bronze medal in the Women’s Time Trial WC4 at the Australian Road Cycling Championships.
At the 2023 Oceania Track Championships, she defeated Meg Lemon in Women’s Individual Pursuit C5 and finished third in the Women’s Omnium C5. Alana went on to win another gold, this time in the Women’s Scratch race C5 at the 2023 UCI Para Cycling Track World Championships in Glasgow.
