Paralympics Australia has congratulated its long-time broadcast partner Seven after the network won the Logie for Most Outstanding Sports Coverage for its broadcast of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic and Olympic Games.
Seven’s expert coverage helped make Tokyo 2020 the most watched Paralympic Games in history. Its daily broadcast reached an average of more than two million Australians and the coverage more than tripled the previous prime time Paralympics viewership record, set during Beijing 2008.
Paralympics Australia Chief Executive Catherine Clark said the award was thoroughly deserved by Seven for its strong commitment to bringing Paralympic sport to vast audiences across the country.
“Seven’s expertise across multiple departments during the Games was simply outstanding,” Clark said.
“The spirit and dedication of the on-air team and crew shone through in the lead-up and throughout the campaign.
“By hosting the Games on its free-to-air channels and showcasing every sport live on the 7Plus app, Seven gave our amazing 179-strong Australian Paralympic Team the perfect avenue to display their talents to more Australians than ever.
“Beyond sport, our athletes carried themselves with dignity and class, which was conveyed beautifully by Seven’s reporters at venues around Tokyo and those in the studio.”
Australia competed in 18 of the 22 sports staged at Tokyo. The Team won 80 medals, including 21 gold, to finish eighth on the gold medal count and sixth in the world overall.
“The Paralympic Games offered millions of Australians a positive boost and inspiration during the pandemic, which they enthusiastically embraced,” Clark said.
“Seven’s team brought our athletes’ stories to life, showcasing the best of human endeavour. I’m so proud of our Team, which produced perhaps the most courageous and successful campaign in our nation’s 61-year Paralympic Games history, and I’m thankful that Seven was there every step of the way, as they have been since Rio 2016.
“On behalf of Paralympics Australia and every member of the Australian Paralympic Team, thank you to the Seven Network for their amazing support during Tokyo 2020 and congratulations for earning this fitting reward.”
