The fourth edition of Paralympics Australia’s Australian Para-Sport Classification Conference, in Melbourne this week, will focus on supporting the needs and capabilities of our National Sporting Organisation partners to deliver classification programs which are crucial to fair competition and increasing participation.

Representatives from 13 sports will be joined by parties from Sport Inclusion Australia, University of Queensland and PA Classification Advisory panellists. The conference will be led by Paralympics Australia’s Classification Manager Cathy Lambert, supported by PA Performance Director Elise Rechichi, PA Athlete Commission Vice-Chair and six-time Paralympian Danni Di Toro, as well as PA’s national network of Participation and Pathways Coordinators.

“This is a significant coming together of Australia’s best minds in the area of Classification, giving us all the opportunity to review, re-think and improve aspects of the way we go about our work,” Lambert said.

“We hosted the first of these annual forums in 2017 and they have become a really great chance to exchange ideas. The Covid pandemic raised new challenges, including finding more efficient models for connecting with athletes, so I’m expecting there to be some very useful insights to help us form new strategies at this year’s conference.”

The focus will be around seven of the themes within the PA 2021-2025 Classification Strategy:

  • High Performance Success
  • Creating Para-sport Pathways
  • Facilitating Social Inclusion
  • Developing People and Culture
  • Using Innovation and Technology to drive improvements
  • Using Marketing and Communication tools
  • Developing Sport Governance and meeting Legal obligations

Each day of the conference will include a variety of keynote speakers, panel discussions, working and small group sessions.
