Matt Brumby’s progression towards the Para cross-country and Para biathlon has been one of setting lofty goals and reaching high standards.  

Matt made his national debut in the world of Para Nordic sport at the Para Biathlon World Cup in Finland in late 2024. But he was already an accomplished Para athlete having first represented Australia in 2010 at the Para Triathlon World Championships.  

Matt acquired his impairment at age 22 while serving in the Royal Australian Navy. His triathlon career led him towards co-captaining the Australian Invictus Games team in 2018, which in turn motivated him pursue further sporting success.  

Endurance events took Matt far and wide. His biggest success was winning the Para Ironman World Championship, taking out the famous race at Kona, Hawaii in 2019.  

Open to new experiences after narrowly missing selection to the Australian Paralympic Team in 2016, he became interested in the Para Nordic sports in recent years and racing at both the Para biathlon and Para Cross-Country World Championships in 2024/2025. 

Matt’s is a huge admirer of Marcel Hug, the Swiss wheelchair racer who has won an amazing seven Paralympic gold medals, and lives by his favourite quote: “Improvise, adapt, overcome”.
