World Record Lifts Aussies To Top Of Commonwealth Games Para Medal Table

Tara Neyland has smashed the world record in the women’s 1000 metres time trial C4-5 to win one of Australia’s final gold medals of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. 

Neyland’s win catapulted Australia to the top of the Para sport component of the Games medal tally with 12 gold medals, ahead of England, which finished with 11. 

Neyland was tracking marginally behind England’s Kadeena Cox for the first half of the kilometre-long race, but stormed home in the final lap to register the unprecedented time of 1.09.667.

Fellow Aussie Erin Normoyle took home the bronze medal. Neyland earlier won gold in the 4000 metres individual pursuit C4-5.  

Neyland won three gold medals at the Track World Championships in Brazil last year, but she is yet to represent Australia at the Paralympic Games.  

Two-time Paralympian Gordon Allan came fourth in the men’s 3000 metres individual pursuit C1-C3. 

Dual gold medals in the non-Paralympic Para bowls women’s and men’s pairs B6-8, respectively, lifted Australia’s Para sport haul, which also included 10 silver and 14 bronze. England finished with 11 gold, nine silver and 10 bronze. Scotland came third with eight gold, three silver and three bronze. Ten countries won Para sport gold medals at the Games.  

Overall, Australia claimed 70 gold and 171 medals in total to finish comfortably ahead of England on 29 gold and 110 medals.
