The Australian Wombats wheelchair basketball 3×3 teams have been selected for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, to be held from 24 – 29 July.
The men’s team are aiming to defend their gold medal from Birmingham 2022 with Paralympians Tom O’Neill-Thorne, Luke Pople and Eithen Leard again suiting up, alongside Victoria/Thuringia Bulls talent Tomas Klein.
The trio were part of the history making squad that delivered Australia’s Commonwealth Games title in Birmingham four years ago. Pople said the group continues to draw motivation from that breakthrough campaign.
“Winning gold in 2022 was an incredible moment for us, but we’ve all kept pushing to improve and grow as a group,” Pople said.
“To have the chance to go again and represent Australia on that stage is something we don’t take for granted, and we’re excited by the challenge ahead in Glasgow.”
The women’s team features experienced Paralympians Hannah Dodd, Georgia Munro-Cook and Taishar Ovens along with emerging star Ebony Stevenson.
Commonwealth Games Australia Chef de Mission Petria Thomas OLY said the squads reflected the depth and strength of Australian basketball programs.
“These squads reflect the incredible depth, talent and resilience we continue to see across Australian basketball,” Thomas said.
Basketball Australia CEO, Matt Scriven said the selections reflect the continued growth and strength of the sport in Australia at the elite level.
“Both our Basketball 3×3 and Wheelchair Basketball 3×3 programs continue to produce athletes who perform on the international stage and embrace the demands of the Commonwealth Games environment.”
Rob Pike will coach the women’s team, with Matt McShane leading the men’s program in Glasgow.
The Commonwealth Games campaigns tip off for the Australian 3×3 teams on 24 July with medals to be decided on 29 July. All action will be broadcast live on Seven, the Official Broadcast Partner of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
