Paralympics Australia is encouraged by the recommendations made in the Independent Panel Report into the experiences of women and girls in swimming and by Swimming Australia’s stated commitment to enact substantive change based on those recommendations.

We sincerely thank the many participants who contributed to the Report, including current and former athletes, coaches, parents, officials, volunteers and administrators. We are particularly grateful for the input of Paralympians. We recognise that providing information to the Independent Panel would have been, in some cases, emotionally difficult.

Diversity and inclusivity are central to the ethos of the Paralympic movement in Australia. We know that participation in sport at all levels can have beneficial outcomes for people of all ages, genders, sexualities and religious and cultural backgrounds, including those who have a disability. It is one reason we have built an athlete-centric culture at our organisation with a heavy focus on athlete wellbeing. It is also why we support any measures that make sporting environments more welcoming.

Paralympics Australia thanks our valued Member organisation, Swimming Australia, for proceeding with this inquiry and for its pledge to implement positive change.
