Five-time World champion Erik Horrie was crowned the 2018 Para-rower of the Year at the Hancock Prospecting 2018 Rower of the Year Awards, held at the International Convention Centre in Sydney on Saturday.

Horrie, the first Australian rower to win five consecutive World Championships said, “It’s a real honour to receive this evening’s award. I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received this year from Rowing Australia, NSWIS, the Australian Paralympic Committee, Sydney Rowing Club and Hancock Prospecting.

“Thank you to my family, Michelle and my three children for all their support, without them I don’t think I would have come this far. Lastly, but by no means least, Jason Baker, he has been my coach for the last six years and I don’t think I would be where I am today without him. I cannot thank him enough for his dedication and commitment in training me to my fifth world Championship and one Paralympic silver medal.”

Baker collected the Para-coach of the Year Award for his work with Horrie.

Rowing Australia Patron and Chairman of the Hancock Prospecting Group, Mrs Gina Rinehart said, “It has been a wonderful evening celebrating the outstanding athletes of the Australian Rowing Team and the Australian rowing community.

“Our dedicated rowers are wonderful role models for our young people, and older Australians too. Thank you for your contribution to our nation. A heartfelt congratulations to all of this evening’s winners, it was fantastic to be a part of such a celebration of rowing and to be able to present so many important awards.”
