Australia’s first gold medal of the Rio 2016 Parlaympic Games has come in the pool, with Lakeisha Patterson taking out the women’s 400m freestyle S8 in a new world record.

The 17-year-old Queenslander shaved 0.11 seconds off the previous world best, held by the USA’s Jessica Long.

Patterson led from the 100m mark and didn’t look back, hitting the wall in 4:40.33, with Long in second and Aussie teammate Maddison Elliott (5:02.13) in fourth.

More to come.
