While the annual Newcastle City Triathlon has been a staple in the triathlon calendar for 26 consecutive years, this year’s event will include the international Para-triathlon circuit for the first time, hosting the 2019 OTU Para-triathlon Oceania Championships on Sunday (24 February).

Para-triathlete and Newcastle local Lauren Parker, who helped to design the course, is enthusiastic about the event’s inclusion and positive it will pave the way for more international Para-triathlon events on home soil.

“It will be a challenging but fun course to race on, taking in the beautiful harbour and beaches Newcastle has to offer,” Parker said. “It’s also a great way to showcase the sport of Para-triathlon to audiences in Newcastle and NSW, alongside the large number of able-bodied triathletes racing across the weekend.

“I look forward to the Newcastle Para-triathlon hopefully becoming an annual event, attracting more and more participants each year.”

Six medal events will be contested at the 2019 OTU Para-triathlon Oceania Championships, with results counting toward athletes’ world rankings.
