Australia has finished with nine medals including three gold at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Nottwil, Switzerland.
On the final day of competition, Emilie Miller (NSW) finished first in the H1 road race.
It was the second first place for team debutant Miller who also recorded the fastest time trial on Friday, however due to the event not meeting UCI regulations regarding the minimum number of participants in each category in order for medals to be awarded, Miller will not be awarded a world title for either result.
Grant Nickel (NSW) finished fifth in the men’s H1 road race, equalling his result from the time trial. Gold went to a solo Nicolas Pieter Du Preez (South Africa) by over seven minutes ahead of Timothy Williams (New Zealand) and Teppo Polvi (Finland).
In the men’s H4 category Nigel Barley (WA) finished in 10th. Rafal Wilk (Poland) won gold with Vico Merklein (Germany) silver and Mathieu Bosredon (France).
Sunday’s action completed a successful world championships, for Team Australia with nine medals. Kyle Bridgwood (QLD) claimed a maiden world title on debut in the C4 time trial. Carol Cooke AM (VIC) won a third consecutive gold in the T2 time trial and also picked up silver in the road race. Alistair Donohoe (VIC) successfully defended his C5 road race title and picked up silver in the time trial.
In the women’s C4 Alexandra Green (NSW) earned silver in the time trial, while Sue Powell (ACT) finished with silver in the road race.
Simone Kennedy (NSW) returns with bronze medals from the C3 time trial and road race.
The 2015 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships was held in Nottwil, Switzerland from 29 July – 2 August 2015.
The Championships will feature road races and time trials across a number of classifications – bicycles (C1-5), tri-cycles (T1-2), hand-cycles (H1-5) and Tandems in both the men and women’s categories.
The 2015 Championships provide valuable qualification points for the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
