Bio

Steve Porter first competed in wheelchair rugby in 1993 and was selected to represent Australia in 1994 at the World Wheelchair Games. Since then, he has gone on to compete in many international championships, including four consecutive Paralympic Games: Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

During his career as an Australian wheelchair rugby athlete, Steve’s best international results have been a silver medal at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, a bronze medal at the 2002 World Championships in Sweden and first place at the Oceania Zonal Championships in 2007. Going into Beijing, the team wanted to rise above their silver medal in Sydney and win gold. The team entered the Games ranked number two in the world and after a tight game with the USA, left with another silver medal, retaining their number two status.

Steve’s list of achievements is significant. In 1998 and 1999, he was named the Most Valuable Player and was selected into the All Star Team in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2002. He has also captained the Australian team on numerous occasions.

Steve works as a human resource manager for ETSA Utilities and is the proud father of two sons. He loves playing wheelchair rugby and will continue for as long as his competitive streak burns.
