Breaking one minute in 100m freestyle
Having set his sights on becoming the best Paralympic swimmer ever, teenager Mitchell Kilduff enters the London 2012 Paralympic Games with a point to prove. Despite his tender age, Mitchell already holds world records in the 50m freestyle and butterfly, the 100m butterfly and the 400m freestyle. He also owns the 50m butterfly short-course benchmark.
Born with autism, a diagnosis was made about Mitchell’s intellectual disability at the age of six. But since he started competing in swimming events at the age of 10, he has fast proven a dominant force in the pool. He won two gold medals at his first National Championships in 2010 and has continued to develop at a rapid rate in the mean time.
The Sydney-sider enjoyed a stellar 2011 season, capped by a swag of seven medals at the National Championships, including three gold. He is also shading his competitors in international competition, displaying all of his considerable talent with four gold medals and one silver at the 2011 Global Games in Italy.
Based at the SLC Aquadot club in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, he is coached by Gavin Stewart, who has proven an extremely influential person in his career. Mitchell remains in awe of Michael Phelps’ achievements in the pool and views the US swimming champion as his favourite sports star. He is likewise impressed at the incredible array of Paralympic gold medals compatriot Matthew Cowdrey has already amassed. Mitchell has plans to follow in Matthew’s footsteps at London 2012 and at many Paralympic Games in the future.
While Mitchell is intensely driven in his pursuit of becoming the best sprinter in the world, he does enjoy some down time by going to the beach and playing Xbox 360. He likes watching television show Merlin and remains immersed in his studies at Kingsgrove North High School.
