One of the Australian athletic team’s youngest members, the London 2012 Games promises to be the experience of a lifetime for Georgia Beikoff. The talented all-round athlete is a recent convert to javelin but it hasn’t stopped her producing impressive results.
A national javelin champion in 2010, Georgia debuted for Australia at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch. As a 17-year-old, she finished seventh and broke an Oceania record. Georgia feels she could have gone even further if it weren’t for the inclement New Zealand weather. She bonded really well with the Australian team and feels the experience has prepared her well for London.
Having only finished high school in 2011, Georgia has an impressive background in sport. She has played soccer for most of her life as well as representative cricket for the Newcastle Breakers women’s team. A medium pace bowler whose best turn with the ball produced 3/5, Georgia was also named in the emerging talent squad for the New South Wales women’s cricket team.
Georgia first got into athletics after attending an Australian Paralympic Talent Search Day, where she met Paralympic gold medallist and world record holder Heath Francis and athletics super coach Iryna Dvoskina. As a seven-year-old, Heath and Iryna identified Georgia as a youngster with serious athletic talent.
Already having a strong throwing arm from cricket, Georgia showed potential for field events. Years later, quite out of the blue, she was invited to attend a Paralympic athletics camp on the Gold Coast. From there Georgia has made enormous progress, culminating in 2010 with a javelin gold medal at the National Athletics Championships in Perth.
Georgia sees cerebral palsy sprinter and Paralympic gold medallist Katrina Webb as both inspiration and motivation when training.
