At 19 years old, Cameron Carr had a promising career in rugby league ahead of him. He had just signed a contract with the Sydney Roosters and was due to drive down to Sydney to start his new life, when the club offered to fly him down a few weeks later.

That weekend Cameron attended a 21st birthday party and his life took a different course. After choosing to get a lift home with a friend instead of catching a taxi, his friend fell asleep at the wheel and crashed 100m from Cameron’s home. Cameron’s neck was broken in the crash and he describes that night as the scariest thing to have ever happened to him.

It took Cameron a little while to get used to using a wheelchair and several years to mentally come to terms with his new lifestyle. After initially shying away from the contact sport that he loved so much before the accident, Cameron rediscovered his competitive streak and took up wheelchair rugby. He is now a successful wheelchair rugby player and silver medaling Paralympian.

Describing himself as casual, loyal and committed, he believes his proudest moment is yet to come and hopes that in London as captain he can lead his team to a gold medal victory.

Since first competing in 2005, Cameron has thrown himself into being the best wheelchair rugby player he can be. The proud Queenslander comes from a sporty family with his father Norm having played State of Origin football for Queensland. He is also an advocate for a healthy lifestyle, loves to cook and is studying to be a nutritionist.
