Bryce Alman
Quick Facts
Bio
Bryce Alman became a quadriplegic after he broke his neck surfing with friends at Phillip Island in 1996. An apprentice engineer before he was injured, Bryce spent five months in hospital undergoing rehabilitation. In 1997, one year after his accident, Bryce discovered wheelchair rugby. Since then he has not looked back, representing Australia for the first time at the World Wheelchair Games in Christchurch in 1999.
At the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, Bryce helped his team qualify for the wheelchair rugby final. Although the Steelers went down by one point to the USA in the gold medal game, winning the silver medal was a great achievement for Bryce. The team lost the gold medal game to the USA again at the Beijing Games, winning Bryce his second silver medal. Although this loss was disappointing at the time, looking back Bryce is pleased with the result. For him the Beijing silver was sweeter than the Sydney silver as he was given more court time and played a larger role in winning the medal.
In 2004, he became the face of the ‘Save Your Neck This Summer’ campaign that was developed in an effort to prevent water-related spinal injuries. For the time being he is taking his wheelchair rugby career one year at a time and would love to compete in London if he can. “I’d love to go if my body holds up,” he says. “London will be my fourth Paralympics.”
