Paralympic gold medallists Kelly Cartwright and Evan O'Hanlon have taken out the top awards for athletes with a disability at Athletics Australia's Athlete of the Year awards in Melbourne last night.

Cartwright earned her accolade as Female Athlete with a Disability of the Year after winning a gold and silver medal at the 2012 Paralympic Games, while O’Hanlon picked up Male Athlete with a Disability after he won two gold medals across 100m and 200m in London.

Australian Paralympic Committee President Greg Hartung has congratulated Paralympic swimmer Jacqueline Freney, who was last night awarded the Prime Minister’s Women in Sport Award.

Freney accepted the award from the Minister for Sport, Senator Kate Lundy at the Women’s Health Magazine ‘I Support Women in Sport’ Awards held at Paddington Town Hall in Sydney.

The Australian Paralympic Committee is saddened by the passing of Australian Paralympic cyclist, Janet Shaw.

Shaw, who competed at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games as a vision impaired tandem cyclist alongside her pilot Kelly McCombie, won two bronze medals in the individual pursuit and road race/time trial.

The Western Australian passed away, aged 46, after a long battle with cancer.

More than 2,400 athletes with a disability have been given the opportunity to further their sporting careers thanks to the Australian Paralympic Committee’s (APC) national classification program.

Since 2006, the program has facilitated the national classification of more than 2,400 Australian athletes with a disability, allowing them to compete at state and national level competitions.

After helping her team to a silver medal in London, three-time Paralympian Tina McKenzie has announced her decision to retire from the Australian Gliders women’s wheelchair basketball team.

Pararoos player Chris Pyne has been named Pararoos Footballer of the Year at the fourth annual Australian Football Awards this week.
