Dual bronze for Australia

Australia’s Paralympic Table Tennis squad are proving they have what it takes to match some of the world’s leading table tennis nations after winning two bronze medals at the Taipei International on the weekend.

Beijing Paralympians Rebecca McDonnell (nee Julian) and Sarah Lazzaro both picked up bronze medals in their singles events and put up a fight for bronze in their team event, narrowly missing out on a spot on the podium.

Australian Paralympic Table Tennis Head Coach Roger Massie was pleased with his team’s results in preparation for the World Championships in October and the London Paralympic Games in 2012.

“I am very happy with the squad and their commitment and team support of each other,” Massie said.

In his first international tournament, Nathan Pellissier was impressive in securing victory in his opening singles match, and then joined fellow Australian Joel Coughlan to progress past the first round in the doubles draw. However, that was as far as both players could advance.

Meanwhile, the other Australian players in action, Steven Watts and Patrick Horn, also saw glimpses of quality form but a match win eluded them.

"We are always striving for improvement and considering the strength of the players here we are very pleased with our players’ performances,” Massie said.
