Commonwealth silver for Williams
Australia’s Annabelle Williams has claimed a silver medal in the first of the multi-class swimming events at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Finishing the S9 50m freestyle in 29.42 seconds, Williams led for much of the race but was out-touched by world record holder Natalie du Toit of South Africa in the final few metres.
Du Toit, a leg amputee who competed at both the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games, finished .13 seconds shy of her world record, and continued her excellent form from the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships in Eindhoven in August where she won six gold and one silver medals.
AIS-based swimmer Ellie Cole, who won two bronze medals at the recent world championships, did not make it on to the medal dais after finishing in fourth position behind English swimmer Stephanie Millward.
Both Williams and Cole will compete in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly later in the week.
