2009 Desert Duel

Darwin to Top Springs
Come walkabout with us in the Top End
Following the huge success of our previous eight adventures which have raised important funds for the Australian Paralympic Committee, the ninth annual Desert Duel will depart from Darwin on Saturday 30th May and finish in Top Springs on Sunday 7th June.  The 2009 journey around the Top End of Australia promises to be a truly awesome experience.

We will visit places you have never thought you would ever get to visit.  Explore the Gulf country as far east as Doomadgee, Roper river, the newly gazetted Limmen National Park, the Gulf’s fishing town of Borroloola where wetlands, water lilies, bird life and water crossings are the order of the day, Tennant Creek – the gold mining centre and crossroads of the Northern Territory, finishing up at Top Springs which is right in the middle of big cattle country.

For the first time on the Desert Duel we have an optional extra. After the Desert Duel ‘Top End’ fly to Groote Eylandt staying at the Dugong Beach Resort which is a brand new $20mil resort.

This is a unique event anticipated by Desert Duellers each year.  Both seasoned off-road drivers and first timers are welcome.  Our sponsor Budget provides current model 4WD rental vehicles to groups of 3-4 and the organisers provide daily route maps and instructions.

The Duel is not a race or rally; you travel at your own pace knowing fellow Duellers are on the track with you.  What is important is that everyone has as much fun as possible travelling to remote parts that they would not otherwise visit, whilst rasing funds for our elite athletes with a disability.  Join us and share the experience with an outstanding group of people.

This year participant numbers will be restricted to ensure the camaraderie and atmosphere which sets our event apart from others can be maintained.  The entry fee for Desert Duel 2009 is $3,500 per person (plus GST) and includes all meals, accommodation, car rental, entertainment and on-road back-up support.  All entry fees are payable to and receipted by the Australian Paralympic Committee.

360HR Bowls Day

Following the success of last year’s Corporate Bowls Day, 360HR, a recruitment and HR consulting company and long term supporters of the APC hosted their annual event on 9 April at Paddington Bowling Club.

Paralympic athletes including Kylie Gauci, Sarah Stewart, Amy Winters, Lynda Holt, Toby Kane and Shannon Dallas joined over 150 people who participated in the bowling and silent and major auctions.

Through the auctions and support of the event’s sponsors (WorkCover NSW, Sophos, TAFE NSW, Toyota and Charter Group) almost $37,598 was raised for the Beijing team.
